“Neighbors Helping Neighbors” Holiday Baskets Program is Under Way!

Published October 23, 2023 | Donate

Every year, CAPSC provides Thanksgiving and winter holiday food baskets to those in need. Hundreds of baskets are distributed each year. Our baskets are filled with a variety of items that will fill a holiday table and lift the hearts of our neediest families.

This fall, we are so excited to share that four Strafford County nonprofits – Community Action Partnership of Strafford County, The Salvation Army of Rochester, SHARE Fund and Grace Community Church – are partnering together to provide holiday meals to local individuals and families in need this Thanksgiving.  We are working together to ensure local families have a memorable holiday meal.

A collaboration to help families during the holidays started with just one person and an idea:

“After working several years as Director at SHARE Fund and seeing the amount of requests, volunteer hours, and products needed to fulfill our Thanksgiving Basket Requests, and knowing of other food resources in the area with similar programs, I reached out to GRACE and CAP originally to discuss the possibility of a community-collaborative effort to support our Neighbors in Need. With coordinating assistance from Allison Bussiere from the Seacoast Food Providers Network, we joined together with the Salvation Army to create this group effort that would support our area’s needs as well as reduce the stress and demand on resources for each individual organization. The result is a one-team, one-community mindset to provide those in Strafford County facing food insecurity with a one-stop-shop for holiday meal support. As the saying goes, “Together, everyone achieves more“.”

What’s in a basket?

A typical holiday basket includes nutritious foods that will provide a complete holiday meal for a family of four, and will include items such as:

  • Whole frozen turkeys (or a gift card equivalent)
  • Stuffing mix
  • Gravy mix
  • Cookie or dessert mixes
  • Cans of sweet potatoes or green beans
  • Fresh vegetables

Grace Community Church has provided Thanksgiving Baskets for nearly 20yrs but this year we are beyond thrilled to be partnering with these three local nonprofits who share our desire to meet the physical needs of our Strafford County community members.

A special thank you goes to another generous community sponsor, Meredith Village Savings Bank.  In order to feed as many families as possible, we are asking for the public’s support, and to make your donations go even farther, MVSB is matching the funds raised, up to $15,000!

CAPSC’s Mission and Vision

Founded in 1965, CAPSC is the sole provider in Strafford County to offer a full suite of programs and services designed to have a measurable impact on the health and welfare of at-risk children, seniors, and people experiencing low incomes.

Without the services provided by our agency, many local residents would be without a means to provide for their basic needs, including food, education, child care, utilities assistance, transportation, housing, emergency shelter and access to other services.
